The Lumie forum has been beset by spam postings for most of the summer. Sometimes these are removed within a day or so but often they are left unattended for days. That is the case as I write this.

Lumie is a relatively quiet forum at the best of times and I am worried that a high incidence of unattended spam will lead to it becoming ever quieter with the ultimate risk that it may be abandoned altogether. I've seen it happen before elsewhere once spam is allowed to take a hold.

I'm not seeking to blame anyone or point the finger, but is there anything that can be done to deal with this problem? As a regular contributor, I would be happy to remove spam myself if given the necessary clearance.

We are at the start of the SAD season and it is important that people feel their messages will be read here at this crucial time without disappearing underneath a load of unattended spam.

Good point, Wooltonian. I'd certainly be very happy for you to have clearance as a moderator.

We had a glorious warm sunny day up in Aberdeenshire, most of which I spent by the seaside. Hard to think autumn is just around the corner.

I couldn't agree more, Wooltonian - you make an excellent point. Lots of spam mail also makes the forum less attractive to any potential newcomers, too. I would also be happy to have you given clearance as a moderator. I wonder if this is possible?

S100 - autumn seems already to have arrived here in the Back of Beyond. I heard Aberdeenshire was nice, though.

Hi Linda, I'm sure you still have some nice days to come this year. From what I remember of the "Utter Hebrides" (as Para Handy called them) October is a safer bet than July.

It's been lovely and warm here for a change and we've had sightings of humpback whales since July. Unbelievably, I saw one on Tuesday at the Forvie nature reserve just north of here!

Hi Wooltonian,

I have been on holiday for the last couple of weeks and have come back to find only one spam post since I have been away.

This has now been deleted.

We can't stop the spammers, but we do our best to keep on top of it.

Thanks,
Lisa @ Lumie

...which is lucky really, since nobody from admin has logged on for the last 18 days and the forum has been beset by spam for most of the summer. Complacent.

Hi Wooltonian,

We do not have to log on to check the forum, only to reply to a query.

Unfortunately the emails (when someone posts to the forum) come through to my email to check, so as I was away on holiday nobody saw this.

We appreciate you keeping an eye out for this also. Sorry that the spam posts were previously missed a few months ago, we had new systems installed and the emails stopped coming through.

Thanks for messaging us. I will keep on top of deleting the spam posts and in the meantime we are doing our best to stop these.

Many thanks,
Lisa @ Lumie

Thanks, Lisa. I didn't mean to have a go at you. It's funny how protective you become towards a forum when you post regularly on it and it means something to you! Thanks for coming on to explain it all.
